A unique lead generation system paired with our proprietary internal technology has created over 4300% growth in six years. Smart City has caused a major disruption in an antiquated apartment locating industry, all while being able to scale to a significant $19m in revenue with no outside funding. Even more impressive and unlike many startups in the real estate space, Smart City has continued to remain profitable during all high growth periods.

Smart City is looking for a talented Controller to lead day-to-day financial operations through the next phase of high growth.

Scope: Reporting to the CEO, the Controller will work closely with the leadership team to establish the company’s goals and strategies, and will be primarily responsible for financial execution. This is both a tactical and a strategic position that will include implementing controls, systems, and processes to create order from chaos. With direct oversight of the finance team, the Controller will lead the month end close, the accounts receivable team and the accounts payable activities of the company. The Controller will also oversee budgets, ensure resources are properly allocated, and oversee financial operations for the entire company. This person will be responsible for creating a workplace that embodies company core values, especially personal and professional growth, and ensures that departments meet individual goals. This is a critical position directly responsible for ensuring day-to-day operations can continue to be financed by new business.

Core Responsibilities

  • Maximizes financial efficiencies by establishing policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems.
  • Ensure the organization has a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism which includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs throughout growth periods.
  • Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Present company financials to the leadership team on a monthly basis, pinpoint problem areas and future concerns.
  • Facilitate the completion of the annual external company financial audit.
  • Build financial models for scenario planning.
  • Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits and providing information to external auditors.
  • Prepares budgets by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans.
  • Achieves budget objectives by scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
  • Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data monthly.
  • Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, anticipating future legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, filing financial reports, and advising management on needed actions.
  • Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results.
  • Maintains financial staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
  • Maintains financial staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Protects operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential.
